The Book Of Life - Deborah Harkness.

It comes without saying that for a long period of time, I have exploded with excitement when it has come to the release of the third book in the All Souls Trilogy – I was briefly introduced to the first book (A Discovery of Witches) roughly two years ago by a close friend and it is safe to say, my interest deepened wildly.

After that wonderful intrusion, I hurried onwards and began the second book Shadow Of Night. Of course when it came to the ending of that book I was left with many questions, plenty of curiosity and endless excitement, I thought ‘Surely, there has to be another book’ and certainly, there was. However this book hadn’t yet been released; Frustration? I think so yes.

When I found out the book would be released in THREE MONTHS time, I felt my inner core ache as my patience already began to wear greatly thin. (How on earth was I to manage three months if on finding out the release date, I crumbled to a crisp?)

Of course the first thing that I did was create a small count down on my phone (Yes I did do that) upon this journey, I remember sending endless texts, tweets to my friends expressing the excitement I had for this book. Yet when it came to only days before the release, I almost certainly felt as if I was going to obliterate (2 days, 4 hours, 51 seconds.) (4 hours, 35 minutes 22 seconds.)

As time droned on, I began to wonder exactly what would happen in the third book; question after question entered my mind and as time did near that certain date, I began to wonder, ‘What if one of my favourite characters died?’ From then on, I felt a large need reach the tip of my toes and insert into the earth beneath me.

-       What if Diana doesn’t give birth?
-       Will something go wrong?
-       Will Matthew possibly die?
-       What happened to the Aunt, was she murdered?
-       What about Diana’s parents, will they be involved even more?
-       Time travelling, will it be included again?

These thoughts never seemed to end and I can honestly say that now, I am thankful that the book has been released – a couple hours before release, I decided to pre-order the book so that in the morning when I woke, it would be directly on my kindle. Shortly after the morning hit our green land, I dove into this book of wonder and didn’t come out until two days after.

When describing this trilogy, I would certainly say that for some it may not interest purely because it is factual and includes a great amount of history – not only that but some chapters seem almost endless and hold so much information that you feel as if all the words may pour out your nose and ears. It is certainly not just a story that you can sweetly read and enjoy imagery as it sits in your mind – your memory must partake within this book, (as for any book series) but specifically with this book.

In this book series, you’re capable of watching this developing world whilst ours swings around it unknowingly and in a way I see it as a very modern touch; in many films or books, you seem characters only involved in their own world whilst also restraining themselves and their family from anything beyond.

With this gentle touch, you see evolution within their species as well as ours, making the story seems much more realistic and believable.

In a way stories such as these (or perhaps those who share a similar genre and plot line) haven’t been rated highly due to certain aspects of the story seeming almost unrealistic, frustrating me entirely, but for the first time, this story seems entirely real.

I was very happy to enter this world time and time again, and I’m certainly sure that I will read this book once more or maybe even four times.

Within these pages, you go through a journey which includes many emotions; as well adventure, education, history, development, evolution and creativity. There are not many things this story lacks and I’m sure I will be persistently recommending this book.

I should also mention that there have only been a few books which have left me mentally exhilarated and almost needing another book to fix the small post-book depression which I’m seemingly suffering from – I can say with confidence that this book left me almost entirely exhausted and I jumped at the chance to discuss it with close friends.

Out of 10? I would certainly go for a 9.
Kudos to Deborah Harkness, I look forward to your future books.
